Penang is a state in Malaysia located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, along the Malacca Strait. It consists of two parts: Penang Island, where the capital city of George Town is situated, and Seberang Perai on the Malay Peninsula. The two parts are connected by Malaysia’s two longest road bridges, namely the Penang Bridge and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, with the latter being the second-longest overseas bridge in Southeast Asia. Penang is the second smallest state in Malaysia by land area and is bordered by Kedah to the north and east, and Perak to the south.

Penang is the 8th most populous state in Malaysia, with a population of nearly 1.767 million as of 2018. It has one of the highest population densities in the country, reaching 1,684/km2 (4,360/sq mi). Seberang Perai is the second-largest city in Malaysia by population. The population of Penang is highly diverse in terms of ethnicity, culture, language, and religion. In addition to the three main races, namely Malays, Chinese, and Indians, Penang is home to significant Eurasian, Siamese, and expatriate communities. Colloquially, residents of Penang are known as Penangites or Penang Lang in the Penang Hokkien dialect, due to the significant Chinese population in Penang.
